CAKE BAKERS WANTED!
A few more cake bakers are needed for the Summer Sunday Teas rota. A list of dates will be on the table at the back of the church by the door. Please put your name down on the date that you can help. Peggy Harwood.
GIFTS AND TALENTS
Some of us know our talents, the things that we are good at. Others often say, 'But what can I do?'.... Following discussions on Bishop John's vision for the Diocese, now called Living Faith, the PCC is wanting to use his pictures to shape the way we make our life together: sustaining the sacred centre, making a difference in the world, shaping confident collaborative leadership, making disciples and creating vibrant Christian communities. One of our priorities at the moment is to discern the gifts amongst us and nurture those gifts. So we are going to invite you to think about the gifts that you have and you are, and ponder on questions, such as 'Have you ever thought of...?' St Mary's Kidlington have begun some thinking and St Johns will begin this Sunday. There will be thoughts to think and sheets to fill in with those thoughts and ideas. We want to help you explore more and learn more about how to develop your gifts. 'Jesus, you are wise and we are your choice, and so we say 'yes' to you and trust your spirit to bring out the best in us... may we make a difference to our church, our community and our world.' (Alison Adam) Hilary.
GATEHOUSE SUPPORTERS
As many of you will know, we are one team providing food to The Gatehouse in Oxford on a four-week cycle. Around 80 guests who are homeless or poorly-housed visit the Gatehouse where hot drinks, sandwiches, cakes, fruit and, in the winter, home-made soup are available. Sandwiches and cakes are delivered to the collection point by 4pm on the rota date. Also needed, any items for making drinks or extra sandwiches are very welcome: tea, coffee, hot chocolate, sugar, packet soups, jam, peanut butter, pickle, tinned tuna or ham etc., but please remember that there are no cooking facilities. Non-perishable goods can be delivered to the collection point or left in the boxes in the churches on the previous Sunday. Two people, on the rota, drive together into Oxford with the donations in the early evening – this only happens about once a year. However, the number of food suppliers and drivers has diminished slightly and we would love to have some new volunteers. If you would like to join the team, either making sandwiches or cake or delivering the food, then please contact me as I will shortly be producing a new rota with dates for the next year. Rota copies will be available in the churches for all existing contributors, but do let me know if you would prefer to receive it by email. Margaret Day (tel: 375916, email: margaret.day12 @ btinternet.com)
MESSAGE FROM MERVYN
Mervyn thanks everyone for their well wishes and concern but will not be taking any calls for a while as he has been instructed to rest. And he says ... "Having had all the usual tests, I have an upper respiratory infection which needs to be treated with strong antibiotics ... I hope I will be back on track before long, but at the moment I need to take it easy for at least six or eight weeks." Mervyn.
FINAL SURGE IN FUNDRAISING FOR CHINA
Thank you all for your support so far in helping me raise money for my trip to China. I have a final £400 to raise and so have decided to do another sponsored run. I was very grateful for your generous sponsorship last time and don't expect it this time but if anyone would like to contribute then a sponsorship form is in the refectory. Thank you, Olivia.
OPEN CHURCHES TRUST
St Mary's will again be open to visitors this summer on Wednesday afternoons from 2.30pm to 5.00pm and Sunday afternoons from 12.30pm to 5.00pm. If you can help by being in church on any of these afternoons, please enter your name on the rota. In addition to welcoming visitors, time spent in the quietness of St Mary's is a wonderful antidote to the stresses and strains of our busy lives. As St Mary's is included in Simon Jenkins' book, England's Thousand Best Churches, we can expect to receive some visitors wishing to view our fine medieval church. Andrew Lloyd Webber set up the Open Churches Trust so that people can visit some of the finest of the country's churches and 'enjoy not only the beauty but also the unique history each can extol'. On Wednesdays we would encourage two stewards to be present. There is a set of notes about the history and architecture of St Mary's on the table near the church door. I am very willing to arrange a church tour if it will help. John Amor.
BIBLE READING FELLOWSHIP NOTES
The new issue of the BRF notes is now available. These booklets give a short Bible passage for each day, with notes and comments, which many people find a helpful way of exploring the Bible further. The cost for a year, which gives you 3 issues starting in May, is £11.10. There are two editions – New Daylight which gives a short daily passage and notes; and Guidelines, which gives weekly units suitable for more in-depth study. If you would like to know more, or wish to order, please contact Janice Venables (376535).

FOOD FOR THOUGHT 5th May
Will be meeting again on Tuesday 5th May beginning at 12 noon until 2pm, at St John's Vicarage (come to side door of vicarage next to church). We are beginning an exploration of the book of Hebrews, a letter with a difference, written by an unknown author (possibly a contemporary of the apostle Paul). We begin with chapters 1 to 7. "At many moments in the past and by many means, God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets; but in our time, the final days, he has spoken to us in the person of his Son.." Come and join us. Bring sandwiches with you, drinks provided.
