General Notices
MONTSHIWA
Kathryn Ellis and Eleanor Williamson will be making another visit to Montshiwa in August, when they will be representing the Oxford Diocese at the Annual Family Weekend of the Kimberley and Kuruman Diocese in Mafikeng. They will be visiting and working with children affected by AIDS, particularly in the schools which we support. They also hope to visit other AIDS projects supported by the Oxford Diocese. In order to raise funds for this visit Anthony and Kathryn and Eleanor invite you to a "Cheese and Wine Evening" at the Rectory on Saturday, July 18th from 6.30. Please indicate if you wish to attend by signing the list or leaving your name at the Parish Office. Everyone, including families, will be welcome, and donations will be gratefully received.
Belfry Open Day and Teas
THE BELFRY OPEN DAY & SUNDAY TEAS raised the amount of £260 which will go to Bell Funds. Very many thanks to the Ringers and Families for this great 4 hours effort. Also a Big thank you to all visitors who donated to our funds and visited the Ringers ringing the Bells. Peter Franklin
PCC NEWS
At our first PCC we considered how we could make PCC meetings more effective. This is of real concern because it has been difficult to get people to serve on the PCC. There are talented, experienced people out there - often busy people, too, we know - whose views we would value. Among other things, we agreed to be better time keepers, and to end meetings no later than 9.30. We are also considering whether a 7.30 start (rather than 8.00) would be better. Please tell us what would make it easier for you to be a PCC member in future. One comment that comes up regularly is that PCC members are usually also made members of a sub-committee, with more meetings to attend. This is a fair comment. But did you know that the committees can co-opt non-PCC members? That means that if you had a particular interest in finance, fabric, outreach, or giving, you could offer to be co-opted onto the relevant committee with no further PCC commitment required. Please consider this as a way of using your talents. The wardens can give you information about the various committees, and help take your interest further. Finally, we still need a PCC Secretary. We don’t bite, and have almost eradicated physical violence at our meetings. Please consider if this is something you can do. Bill Evershed.
CAKE BAKERS WANTED!
A few more cake bakers are needed for the Summer Sunday Teas rota. A list of dates will be on the table at the back of the church by the door. Please put your name down on the date that you can help. Peggy Harwood.
GIFTS AND TALENTS
Some of us know our talents, the things that we are good at. Others often say, 'But what can I do?'.... Following discussions on Bishop John's vision for the Diocese, now called Living Faith, the PCC is wanting to use his pictures to shape the way we make our life together: sustaining the sacred centre, making a difference in the world, shaping confident collaborative leadership, making disciples and creating vibrant Christian communities. One of our priorities at the moment is to discern the gifts amongst us and nurture those gifts. So we are going to invite you to think about the gifts that you have and you are, and ponder on questions, such as 'Have you ever thought of...?' St Mary's Kidlington have begun some thinking and St Johns will begin this Sunday. There will be thoughts to think and sheets to fill in with those thoughts and ideas. We want to help you explore more and learn more about how to develop your gifts. 'Jesus, you are wise and we are your choice, and so we say 'yes' to you and trust your spirit to bring out the best in us... may we make a difference to our church, our community and our world.' (Alison Adam) Hilary.
GATEHOUSE SUPPORTERS
As many of you will know, we are one team providing food to The Gatehouse in Oxford on a four-week cycle. Around 80 guests who are homeless or poorly-housed visit the Gatehouse where hot drinks, sandwiches, cakes, fruit and, in the winter, home-made soup are available. Sandwiches and cakes are delivered to the collection point by 4pm on the rota date. Also needed, any items for making drinks or extra sandwiches are very welcome: tea, coffee, hot chocolate, sugar, packet soups, jam, peanut butter, pickle, tinned tuna or ham etc., but please remember that there are no cooking facilities. Non-perishable goods can be delivered to the collection point or left in the boxes in the churches on the previous Sunday. Two people, on the rota, drive together into Oxford with the donations in the early evening – this only happens about once a year. However, the number of food suppliers and drivers has diminished slightly and we would love to have some new volunteers. If you would like to join the team, either making sandwiches or cake or delivering the food, then please contact me as I will shortly be producing a new rota with dates for the next year. Rota copies will be available in the churches for all existing contributors, but do let me know if you would prefer to receive it by email. Margaret Day (tel: 375916, email: margaret.day12 @ btinternet.com)
OPEN CHURCHES TRUST
St Mary's will again be open to visitors this summer on Wednesday afternoons from 2.30pm to 5.00pm and Sunday afternoons from 12.30pm to 5.00pm. If you can help by being in church on any of these afternoons, please enter your name on the rota. In addition to welcoming visitors, time spent in the quietness of St Mary's is a wonderful antidote to the stresses and strains of our busy lives. As St Mary's is included in Simon Jenkins' book, England's Thousand Best Churches, we can expect to receive some visitors wishing to view our fine medieval church. Andrew Lloyd Webber set up the Open Churches Trust so that people can visit some of the finest of the country's churches and 'enjoy not only the beauty but also the unique history each can extol'. On Wednesdays we would encourage two stewards to be present. There is a set of notes about the history and architecture of St Mary's on the table near the church door. I am very willing to arrange a church tour if it will help. John Amor.

Dated Notices
FOOD FOR THOUGHT 2nd June
The lunchtime bible discussion group will be meeting again on Tuesday 2nd June beginning at 12 noon until 2pm, at St John's Vicarage come to side door of vicarage next to church) We are concluding an exploration of the book of Hebrews, a letter with a difference, written by an unknown author (possibly a contemporary of the apostle Paul), someone who seems to be an experienced preacher and expositor, writing to a group of Jewish Christians. Just as our current age is a time of religious transition, when alongside the rejection of faith there are also people seeking new ways to think about religions and practise faith, the writer of the Letter to the Hebrews also writes at a pivotal moment in religious history. We continue with chapters 8 to 13 "Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it." Bring sandwiches with you, drinks provided.

Following its successful conference, "Restoring Hope", last November, the Kidlington Parish-based group ACHIVA (Addressing the Challenges of HIV and AIDS) is presenting a talk by Kate Wooding on Saturday, 20th June. Kate and her husband lived for a number of years in rural Uganda where they ran Kiwoko Hospital, which doubled in size over the six years they were there. With sponsorship from CMS they will be returning with their children to Uganda in August, this time to the capital, Kampala. Kate has written a thesis on the difficulties encountered by children diagnosed with HIV and prescribed ARV drugs, in rural areas which lack medical facilities and do not offer a reliable infrastructure to ensure supplies of the essential medication. The talk will take place on Saturday, 20th June at Kidlington Baptist Church, High Street, Kidlington. Coffee will be served on arrival and the talk, beginning at 10.00am, will be followed by light refreshments and an open discussion. Entrance £5 payable at the door, but you are asked to notify Margaret Day of your intention to come on 01865 375915 or achiva@btinternet.com . Website : www.achiva.org.uk
