ST. MARGARET’S APPEAL
| St Margaret’s Church, Oxford, was built 1883 – 1893 by H. G. W. Drinkwater and is an attractive example of the gothic style popular at the time, with some fine examples of Victorian ecclesiastical design in its rood screen and reredos. During the 1980s, the parish combined with neighbouring SS Philip and James following the closure of Phil and Jim church, and now, with the housing developments of recent years, the congregation is growing fast. | |

However, the years have taken their toll on the fabric of the church. The organ, in particular, is in dire need of restoration. Originally built by William Hill and Sons in 1892, the instrument has survived with little work done on it since 1921 and now needs serious attention if it is to continue to provide music into the next century. The plan is to rebuild it, using as much of the original Hill pipe work as possible, with the option of re-siting it more advantageously within the church. |
| Many people are drawn to St Margaret’s style of worship and in order to enhance this in its characteristic setting, there is now a pressing need to cherish our Victorian legacy. We need to improve the area around the nave altar. We also hope to provide better congregational seating and lighting and proper music desks for the choir, which has long had a reputation for providing good quality traditional Anglican music to accompany services. It offers a good musical training to an increasing number of boys and girls, men and women in the locality. |

The appeal is supported by international recitalist Simon Lindley, Organist of Leeds Parish Church, President of the Royal College of Organists 2000-2002 and a former organist of St Margaret’s Church |
With its wide nave and good sight lines, the church makes a popular concert venue. Restoration of the organ and improvement of some interior furnishings and facilities will, we hope, greatly extend opportunities for the community to enjoy the church as a venue for choral concerts, organ recitals, chamber music, plays and other local events. We want this church to be a welcoming and inspiring focus for worship, music and the community in this part of North Oxford. |
| Please help us to secure St Margaret’s future within the community. |

A number of money-raising events will take place in the church over the next few months. Please come and take part. The amount to be raised is substantial and we need long-term commitments to achieve our objective. We very much hope you will consider making a regular commitment to St Margaret’s Appeal for a total of four years. Please send any contribution you can make, large or small, to:
